Land Art Museum - Hestøya
AN ISLAND OF LAND ART
Land Art Hestøya is an art project that extends an annual global open call invitation to land artists worldwide who would like to come and create unique works of land art that blends in with the natural landscape on Hestøya island, a remote island situated at Lund in the municipality of Namsos in Mid-Norway. The project aims to transform the entire island into a living museum and an inspiring platform dedicated to land art and art in nature. The participating artists contribution will become part of a living collection of land art that will transform over time.
ONLINE ARCHIVE AND GALLERY
In conjunction with the physical art on the island, we are creating an online archive that showcase photography and film documentation of the art works and the processes around the work created on the island. Currently the archive is on our website https://www.landartmuseum.no/artwork.html
WHY CURATE EVERYTHING ON AN ISLAND?
Today land art remains largely inaccessible to the general public due to the dispersed nature of its installations in remote locations. By creating a permanent exhibition of land art on the island of Hestøya, the museum and the art form can attract a broader audience. The project seeks to elevate land art as a medium and nature as an important platform for artistic expression.
RETHINKING THE CONCEPT OF A MUSEUM
Through Land Art Museum Hestøya we aspire to make you rethink the concept of a museum. By uniting our passion for art, nature, and environmental conservation we seek to shed light on the interconnectedness between art, nature and humans and portray how nature can be a potent platform for creation of art and at the same time an inspiration to how we can safeguard our natural heritage. By establishing an open air museum for land art that are free are and accessible all year around, we hope to lower the threshold for the general public to come close to and experience this intriguing art form.
